New Volvo XC90 2022 Concept – Volvo is the fourth automakers committed to integrating AV Waymo technology in its vehicles, the vehicle can operate without a human driver behind the wheel, Volvo also has plans to sell to customers vehicles that are partially equipped with a LiDAR sensor made by the US startup Luminar. The automakers said the vehicle would be able to drive itself on the freeway, without human intervention, and would start launching the production line in 2022.
That means that Volvo will integrate autonomous driving technologies, fully autonomous vehicles have the potential to increase road safety to previously invisible levels and to revolutionize the way people live, but only within certain geographic locations and under certain conditions, such as good weather.
What’s New Volvo XC90 2022
New Volvo XC90 2022 Luminar Lidar Hardware
Volvo announced in May that they would complement the next generation of Volvo with the LiDAR Luminar technology. Volvo Cars of Sweden announced it would be installed on the next XC90 commercial vehicle released in 2022. The capabilities of the detection technology are installed in the new Volvo XC90, a sensor called LiDAR mounted on the front of the new Volvo XC90. This sensor device is much smaller than the Volvo sensor device that has been used before, the LiDAR Sensor is also attached to the raised roof.
The first 360-degree rotating perimeter scanner was a cylinder with height and diameter of each about 30 cm and mounted on the roof of the vehicle. Nowadays, non-rotating type and thin type have been developed, and the miniaturization is excellent. The price is getting cheaper.

The meaning of LiDAR is light detection and distance measurement. The laser beam is transmitted to the environment and reflected light is captured by the sensor to form an image. The 360-degree rotary type is capable of measuring all the circumference and starts to be used practically in the 1960s. At the beginning of development, it was mounted on airplanes and used to record terrain and meteorological observation. The earliest Ligand is very expensive, and its performance is worse than it is now. Later, it was developed as a military sensor, and miniaturization has evolved since the 1990’s when the U.S. military assigns private enterprises to develop compact and lightweight products for vehicles.
According to the Luminar, the LiDAR called “Iris ” which is adopted by Volvo can be up to 250 m in size, and the measuring angle in the vehicle is about 90 degrees in the horizontal direction and about 30 degrees in the vertical direction. It emits a laser beam in the form of millions of pulses and can create 3D maps (three-dimensional) roads in front without external infrastructure support such as connecting to the Internet. This is a stand-alone sensor and is said to be able to detect “presence or absence of objects” even when object reflection is low.
New Volvo XC90 2022 Design
The other important next-generation Volvo XC90 disclosure is that it will also be offered with autonomous driving level 4, allowing for hands-free driving and without eyes, although the driver still needs to pay attention and take full control if necessary. Whether government regulations in some or all countries will allow the driver to use Level 4 autonomy is another matter.
New Volvo XC90 2022 Release
Volvo is a system that uses LiDAR and cameras, and the first plan to commercialize partially automated driving on the TOLL road. Volvo announced in December last year that it will develop what it needs for its users, rather than talking about Level 3 or Level 4 or the standalone driving level. Recently, when announcing the installation of LiDAR in the next-generation XC90, it suggests the possibility of level 3 autonomous driving equivalent.
New Volvo XC90 2022 Price
The next Volvo XC90, which will be released in 2022, will offer a complete electrification option along with a light hybrid and lightweight plug-in variant. According to Volvo, the target price for the whole system, including LiDAR, is less than $1,000 (about 110,000 yen).
